REGULATION OF ICT INDUSTRIES
The interplay between regulation and ICT industries is the main focus of my research. I am interested in the impact that regulation has on companies in the ICT field but also on the way companies try to influence government to achieve their goals. Under this major umbrella I have focus my intellectual curiosity in the following current research projects.

Information and Communications Technologies Convergence Project (ICTC):
This is a project in cooperation with Ian MacInnes where we are analyzing industries and the way the changes in industry are affecting the way they are regulated. Research projects in this area include:

Garcia-Murillo, M. “Regulatory Responses to Convergence: Experiences from Four Countries,” INFO, (forthcoming) February 2005.

García-Murillo, Martha and Ian MacInnes, “The impact of technological convergence on the regulation of ICT industries,” Journal of Media Management, Vol. 5 No. 5 2003

García-Murillo M., MacInnes I., “FCC organizational structure and regulatory convergence, Telecommunications Policy.  Vol.  25 Issue 6, July 2001.

Infrastructure Project:
Information and Communications Infrastructure has become fundamental to the economic, social and cultural development of a country. The research conducted under this project aims to determine the factors that affect the deployment of ICT infrastructure around the world. I am also currently working with some professors in Mexico to help expand connectivity in that country. Research projects that I have conducted in this area include:

García-Murillo, M., “International Broadband Deployment: The Impact of Unbundling” Communications and Strategies (fortcoming) January, 2005.

García-Murillo, “Assessing The Impact Of Internet Telephony On The Deployment Of Telecommunications Infrastructure,” Computer Networks Journal, (Under review)

García-Murillo M., "Institutions and the adoption of electronic commerce in México," Electronic Commerce Research Journal, Volume 4, Issue 3 July, 2004.

Garcia-Murillo, Martha, “Patchwork Adoption of ICTs in Latin America” Electronic Journal of Information Systems in Developing Countries, Vol. 15 No. 1, 2003

Regulation and Industry Behavior Project (R&IB):
Many ICT industries are heavily regulated. Scholars that have analyze the field recognize that regulation affects industry in multiple ways. The purpose of this project is to look at the impact that differing types of regulation have on industry. Research conducted within this project includes the impact of incentive price regulation on the quality of telecommunication services. The impact of unbundling rules on broadband infrastructure deployment. Research projects in this area include:

García-Murillo, M., “Efectos de las Diferencias Entre Principales y Agentes en la Armonización de las Leyes de Telecomunicaciones en Centroamérica,” Revista de Ciencias Sociales (forthcoming).

García-Murillo M., MacInnes I., "The impact of legislative change on the behavior of telecommunications carriers" Telecommunications Policy. (under review)
