Milton Mueller's research and teaching explores the political economy of communication and information. Since 1996 he has focused on Internet governance and Internet freedom. His new book Networks and States: The global politics of Internet governance (MIT Press, 2010) provides a comprehensive overview of the political and economic drivers of a new global politics. His prior book Ruling the Root: Internet Governance and the Taming of Cyberspace (MIT Press, 2002) was an acclaimed scholarly account of the creation of a global governance regime, ICANN, to manage the domain name system.
Mueller uses the theoretical tools of property rights analysis and institutional economics, employing both historical and quantitative social science methods. Mueller received the Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1989. His commentary and analysis can be found on the Internet Governance Project blog and on Twitter.”
