Prof. Joon S. Park

 
 

Over the past decades Prof. Park has been involved with theoretical/practical research and education in information and systems security, publishing more than 80 peer-refereed research papers in the area. As of March 2013, his scholarly achievements have been cited about 1600 times (by Google Scholar: Joon S. Park). He is Syracuse University’s Point of Contact (POC) – both for Education and Research, respectively – at the Center of Academic Excellence (CAE) in Information Assurance (IA), which is designated by the National Security Agency (NSA) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) at the university. He is also the Principal Investigator (PI) for the Department of Defense (DoD) Information Assurance Scholarship Program (IASP) at Syracuse University. Since he joined the School of Information Studies (iSchool) (iSchool, ranked No.1 in information systems by U.S. News and World Report) at Syracuse University in 2002, he has been involved in numerous research and education grants in information and systems security (a total of about $3M grants). He has been the lead faculty member in developing the security curriculum for the iSchool, including the Certificate of Advanced Study (CAS) in Information Security Management (ISM). Currently, he is the director of the CAS ISM program. He was nominated for the Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship (2004) as a young scientist in computer science (38 past Sloan Fellows have become Nobel Laureates). He served as an invited review panelist for the National Science Foundation (NSF)'s Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) on Computer Science and the Trustworthy Computing (TC) Program. He completed his doctorate in the area of information security at George Mason University, Fairfax, Virginia, in 1999. Before he joined the iSchool, he worked for the Center for High Assurance Computer Systems (CHACS) at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), Washington, D.C. During his sabbatical (Fall 2011 – Summer 2013), his research has been sponsored by the U.S. National Research Council (NRC), National Academies, as an NRC Fellow.

NSA/DHS CAE Re-designation (2012)

Syracuse University has received re-designation as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education (CAE/IAE) by the United States National Security Agency (NSA)/Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Prof. Park led the re-designation process with other IA faculty at the university.


NRC RAP Award (2011)

Prof. Park has received the National Research Council (NRC)’s Research Associateship Award.


NSA/DHS CAE-R Designation (2009)

The National Security Agency (NSA) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) have designated Syracuse University as a national Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance (IA) – Research (CAE-R) for academic years 2009-2014. Prof. Park serves as the agency’s PoC (Point of Contact) at Syracuse University.
